Mexico City. The Mexican space weather service (Sciesmex) of the UNAM geophysics institute reported that the severe geomagnetic storm in the country lasted more than 39 hours, but its evolution reveals that it has ended.
Specialists pointed out that this phenomenon produced observable northern lights in some regions of Mexico, but is currently in the recovery phase, characterized by a gradual decrease in its intensity.
“Mexico’s regional geomagnetic indices indicate undisturbed values for more than 9 hours, so we can consider that the severe geomagnetic storm event has ended,” they said in a statement.
However, academics from this institute of the national university warned that there is a possibility that another solar storm will arrive in the terrestrial environment in the next few hours.
“If this occurs, the geomagnetic storm condition could increase its intensity again and extend its duration for a few hours.”
According to their analysis, the active region, responsible for the solar storms that caused the geomagnetic storm of May 10, is approaching the solar limb. It is expected that the solar storms it may produce now will have lesser effects on Earth.
