They move in convoys with Western vehicles and go out in small groups. The offensive was also held back by the fighters of the “Wolves” volunteer brigade. About how they work – in the report.
“Great Pressure”
Brigade positions are entered only at night. “Wolves” cover Artyomovsk from the north. In recent days, the fighting here has intensified.
“Today, around five in the morning, six tanks and about 20 armored personnel carriers advanced in our direction. The infantry, using smoke bombs, wanted to get closer. We did not let them. The artillery met them from afar. They tried to repeat – unsuccessfully. Their evacuation machines were coming often for the wounded and the dead. The fight lasted for five hours, now it has calmed down a little,” says the fighter with the call sign “Owl”.
The brigade was transferred here in the spring. While Artyomovsk is liberated, the “wolves” hold the flanks. One of the hottest days is May 11. Soldiers from the Ukrainian Armed Forces land a landing a few hundred meters away.
“We were going to surround. As a result, they were hit in the teeth and rolled back. Now we keep a distance: from 300 to 500 meters,” continues Buhala.
The command of the Armed Forces throws the mobilized and territorial defense into hell. When success is planned, more trained fighters are used. Including mercenaries.
“While the artillery and tanks are working on our front line, their infantry is trying to break through with light armor. If the equipment is broken, then they dismount and hurry,” explains the commander of the “Wolves” with the call sign “Baghdad”. He is an experienced military man – he has missions in Syria and Africa behind him. Now together with all those on duty at the front.
The brigade was one of the first to enter the suburbs of Kiev. They fought near Izyum, near Kremennaya and Avdeevka.
They scout first. But with the passage of time, they also start storming.
„Own function’
“Each direction has its own particularities. The main difficulty here is the hilly terrain. The ASU has occupied a height and will not come straight at us, otherwise we will know immediately,” says Baghdad.
According to him, on the other side they know who they are fighting. Therefore, they do not approach the “Wolves”.
“They go to the neighbors. Once they got into a trench without insignia. They only operate at night, and for a short time. They don’t decide to attack us,” says a sniper with the call sign “Moskal”.
He was on the “point” almost 24 hours a day and did not close his eyes – he followed the goal. “I beat him,” he snorts.
The equipment he went on a mission with was almost fifty kilograms. Of them, more than ten are SVLK-14S “Sumrak” rifles. It hits two kilometers away.
Cartridges for weapons, by the way, the sniper makes together with his colleagues. Sometimes even at the front. Volunteers also help. If bought, one will cost from three to five thousand rubles (60-100 BGN). And if he assembles himself – up to a thousand. A minimum of 150 pieces are produced per day.
Moskal was recently cut by shrapnel. He refused to evacuate. He waits until it gets dark – it’s safer that way.
“The medics came under fire. There were wounded. The main thing is that they got away,” emphasizes the fighter.
The VSU monitors the movements. And they try to provoke in order to calculate fire points.
“They are carrying out so-called harassing shooting,” specified the commander of the intelligence group with the call sign “Struna”. “They are waiting for us near the broken equipment to strike. Therefore, we are not yet ready to evacuate the machines”, he explains.
“Our Duty”
Medics are on duty around the clock. “By the morning, five wounded. The main flow is at night. And shells are coming to us. Half an hour ago – boom – and everyone was stunned. But we came to our senses”, says the chief doctor of the “Wolves” and shows the fresh crater.
Their main task is to stabilize the condition of the fighter. The seriously ill are sent to hospital.
“Here we only treat the slightly injured. For example, with an injury. Now there are three such patients, we put on droppers, we monitor them. In a few days they will return to work. The conditions are combat, but nevertheless there is everything for first aid”, the doctor with the call sign “Doc ” holding boxes full of medicines in his hands.
The resuscitator comes to Donbass as a volunteer already in September. Together with his son, also a doctor. And the second goes machine gunner. Awaiting transfer to the conflict zone is. “I have five in total. My wife went into hysterics when the boys and I decided on this. Her own brother died in battle, a cousin also fought … He is very worried about us. But this is our duty”, he smiles.
At the evacuation point of the “Wolves” there are doctors from other units, whose fighters also hold the northern flank. Here, in particular, is the volunteer detachment “Nevsky”. The medic with the call sign “Gradus” serves there.
He arrived a few months ago from Lipetsk. All this time he was on the front line, living in the dugout. He has already managed to save many, for which he recently received the Order of Bravery.
“We recently towed a fighter. We thought he was gone. Open fracture of the right knee joint, closed fracture of the hip. There was no pulse. I saved him. That’s why they awarded me. Although I don’t think I did anything heroic,” the soldier says.
Doctors have time to sleep during the day. But they don’t close their eyes – because of the constant shelling.
No delay
“Wolves” hold positions near Soledar. The kamikaze drones are constantly attacking. Then the cannons are added. According to the fighters, everything is now in the hands of the gunners.
“The counter-battery of the Ukrainian Armed Forces is strong. If you send, conditionally, five projectiles, ten immediately fly in response,” explains a serviceman with the call sign “Youth”. He is 23 years old from Yekaterinburg. He left a small business and joined the brigade at the beginning of the year.
After combat duty, he trains newcomers into position. “No time to rest,” he snapped.
Classes with the D-20 howitzer are scheduled to follow. The soldiers of the artillery battalion unload the cannon in the field, set it up, point it at the target, fire a blank. And they turn around. First, everything must be done without mistakes. Next, for speed.
“My task is to explain the principle. Near Soledar, you must act quickly and precisely. Without delay,” says the instructor.
The educational center
Special attention is paid to training in the brigade. “Wolves” is one of the few units with its own training center. They prepare specialists from various profiles. The course lasts one month.
“We are approached by divisions of the Ministry of Defense, private military companies, and employees of the internal affairs bodies. The flow is large. We also train instructors,” enumerates instructor Oleg Blokhin.
They even train prisoners. A fighter with the call sign “Kipish” is responsible for them. In March last year, he was seriously injured. Now it is back in service – at the range.
The quota is different, as are the deadlines. Some are stressed because of the new conditions. There are also those who miss the zone,” says Kipish. “We immediately rule out looting and robbery. We strictly follow the discipline, observe the regime. And in classes, the attitude towards them is the same as with the others. As for the others, we have a common task – that all cadets return alive”, adds the instructor.
Experienced fighters also hone their skills here – between combat missions. Stormtroopers and scouts understand that protection is temporary. Sooner or later they will be ordered to advance.
