A white plastered enclosure was found in the upper part of the Rurupa ceremonial temple, in the Anco Huallo district of the Chincheros province, department of Apurímac (Peru), the Ministry of Culture of the Andean country reported this Thursday.
From the ceremonial temple of Rurupa, approximately 3,000 years old, there is evidence that it was a highly visited site despite its complex accessibility. There a platform represented a ceremonial center related to ritual activities.
The platform was structured in a rectangular shape with a staircase of three steps, making visible in the upper part a construction of three structures and an anteroom, specialists mentioned.
“The highlight is that they are plastered with a layer of white,” archaeologist Edison Mendoza, a professor at the professional school of Archeology and History of the National University of San Cristóbal de Huamanga, told the state agency Andina.
Mendoza, who led the team that discovered the enclosure, indicated that they painted it with lead, brown and reddish colors. «This type of architecture is very rare in the Peruvian mountains; On the contrary, they are very coastal evidence, which proves contacts with sites in that part of the country,” he said.
“Inside one of them we have found a rectangular altar, on top of which the skull of a guinea pig was found, which is currently not only related to food, but also to ritual practices,” Mendoza added.
The Peruvian Government announced that visits to the Rurupa ceremonial temple will soon be enabled.
