New York. An unpublished waltz by Chopin, composed 200 years ago, was discovered in the archives of the Morgan Library and Museum in New York.
The score, written on a card with the handwritten name of Frédéric Chopin, was found by a curator last spring, the American newspaper reported on Sunday The New York Times.
“I thought, ‘What’s going on here? What could this be? I didn’t recognize the music,'” conservative Robinson McClellan told the newspaper.
At first, after photographing the score and playing it on a piano in his home, the curator was not sure that the piece was really by Chopin, the master of melancholy.
He then consulted with an academic from the University of Pennsylvania who was an expert on the Franco-Polish composer and, after analyzing the ink and paper, the institution concluded that they corresponded to Chopin.
The handwriting was also found to match that of the musician, in particular the reproduction of a stylized bass clef, as well as the composer’s characteristic scribblings.
“We are completely confident in our conclusion,” McClellan said.
The museum believes the music dates to between 1830 and 1835, when Chopin was in his early 20s.
The melody features a stark opening, which was defined by pianist Lang Lang as a “dramatic darkness turning into something positive.”
Chopin, who wrote primarily piano solos, died at age 39 in France in 1849.
