The Federal Commission for the Protection against Health Risks (Cofepris) reported on the results of the study released by the American College of Cardiology, which reveals that people who consume vapers and electronic cigarettes are 19 percent more likely to develop heart failure compared to those who have never used them.
This new discovery about the negative impact on health is part of one of the largest studies to date to investigate possible links between vaping and heart failure.
The results were presented during the annual scientific session of the American College of Cardiology, in the United States, which took place from April 6 to 8, 2024.
Researchers used survey data and electronic health records in a large national study of American adults, conducted by the National Institutes of Health, to examine associations between e-cigarette use and new diagnoses of heart failure in a sample of 175 thousand 667 participants.
Of this group, 3,242 developed heart failure during an average follow-up of 45 months.
The study considered a wide range of demographic and socioeconomic elements, as well as other risk factors for heart disease and participants’ previous and current use of other substances, including alcohol and tobacco products.
Additionally, they found no evidence that participants’ age, sex, or smoking status modified the relationship between e-cigarettes and heart failure.
The information that is made known, he indicated, is of utmost relevance for Cofepris, since it is added to the already existing scientific and technical elements, such as the first analytical study, designed and developed by the scientific staff of Cofepris, through which All the substances contained in vapes were known.
In 2022, the National Reference Laboratory of this agency carried out a detailed study to identify the components of the substances used in these devices, which are not declared on the packaging.
Through the chromatography technique, which is used to separate, identify and quantify the molecules contained, it was possible to find substances such as dimethyl ether, a flammable compound used to burn warts; linalool, used as an insecticide; eugenol, used to kill fish in aquariums; and benzyl alcohol, present in soaps, creams and cleaning products.
Substances such as menthol were also found, which acts directly on nicotine receptors, making these products more addictive.
Likewise, it was announced that the risks associated with the consumption of these devices include shortness of breath, nausea, vomiting, pain in the chest and/or abdomen, rapid heartbeat, diarrhea and lung diseases.
Furthermore, the use of vaping devices in young people who have not smoked tobacco increases the probability of developing addiction.
Based on the scientific evidence that is added every day to confirm and find new findings on serious health damage caused by the consumption of vapers and electronic cigarettes, Cofepris urges not to consume and use these devices that are prohibited in our country, due to the irreversible damage to health, and invites citizens to be an active part of surveillance, reporting points of sale of vaping devices or electronic cigarettes.
