They demonstrated in Brussels for taxation of the super-rich

According to the three demonstrating NGOs, it would be a solution to the world’s problems if the richest were fairly taxed.

Activists of three large NGOs used an inflatable plane to demonstrate against the low taxation of the super-rich in front of the European Parliament’s headquarters in Brussels. Avaaz, WeMove and Oxfam mainly complain that social differences are increasing in the EU. According to Oxfam, member states lose €33 million an hour because they unfairly tax the richest Europeans.

“First of all, it is ordinary people who suffer the harmful effects of inflation, livelihood crises and the pandemic. 99% of the EU population has become poorer since 2020. That is why we are asking today to forget about austerity and for the states to spend more on hospitals and climate protection. We know where the money is. It’s not rocket science,” said Oxfam executive Julien Desiderio.

Property tax, profit tax, extra profit tax

Civilians also object that the richest Europeans are also the biggest polluters. Members of the top one percent produce fourteen times as much pollution as the average person.

“If we can impose a wealth tax on the super-rich, then we will have the resources to save our planet. Farmers are harmed by what is happening to our climate, through droughts and floods. We need money and it can come from taxing the super rich. They barely pay anything,” explained Julio Carini, a member of WeMove.

In addition to the property tax, citizens also demand the introduction of a profit tax and an extra profit tax from the European Union.
