Relatives and friends of Julián Carrillo Martínez, as well as activists, demanded that those intellectually responsible for the murder of the defender of the forests of the Sierra Tarahumara be captured, which occurred on October 28, 2018 in the Rarámuri community of Coloradas de la Virgen, in the municipality of Guadalupe y Calvo.
The organization Alianza Sierra Madre AC (ASMAC) denounced “about six years after the homicide, entire families from the community remain displaced, despite the fact that last May they won an injunction against federal and state authorities, in which they are ordered to guarantee a safe return.”
Furthermore, the organization pointed out “that although there is a sentence against two of the four material authors of Julián’s murder, the intellectual authors have still not been captured.”
“Due to his work as an environmental defender, Julián had been included since 2014 in the Protection Mechanism for Human Rights Defenders and Journalists.”
As a security measure, the federal government provided him with a satellite phone to communicate. However, to use it, Julián was forced to climb to high areas of the mountains to obtain a signal.
It was with that device that Julián narrated in February 2016 how his son-in-law and his son, Víctor Carrillo Carrillo, were killed. After what happened, instead of fleeing, Julián remained present in Coloradas de la Virgen to continue his position as Commissioner of Communal Property, defending the forest from loggers and mining companies.
They report that four days before his murder, Julián warned that there were people who were “hunting” him. When he climbed to the top of the hill, to use the satellite phone and notify the authorities, four hitmen took his life. At that moment he was also accompanied by his six-year-old grandson, a survivor of the day Victor was murdered.
“Julian will live in eternity. Each pine tree that still remains in its community reminds us of its bravery. The rains that are now missing let us know that he was right when he said “the forest feeds us and embraces us when it is cold or when it is sunny,” declared ASMAC.
