They demand an end to attacks against Zapatista communities in Chiapas

Mexico City. Members of the National Indigenous Congress, student and popular groups, as well as union groups marched from the Antimonumento +43 towards the Zócalo to demand “an end to the attacks against <a href="https://www.world-today-news.com/captain-marcos-of-the-ezln-speaks-on-capitalism-and-technology/" title="Captain Marcos of the EZLN speaks on capitalism and technology”>Zapatista communities” in Chiapas.

In the mobilization they also demanded justice for Father Marcelo Pérez, murdered last October 20 in San Cristóbal de las Casas.

They denounced that in recent weeks “this paramilitary narco war has intensified” in the state, where armed groups “steal land” from the communities.

“Chiapas is not a barracks, get the Army out of it!”, “Out with the paramilitaries!”, “Long live the EZLN!” and “People united will never be defeated!” were some of their slogans.

In the Zócalo, protesters held a rally in front of the National Palace, which was protected by metal straw fences and elements of the capital police.

During the march, a small group of people with their faces covered painted the Fountain of the Republic, shops, newsstands and vandalized a cafeteria.

At the rally, the CNI denounced “the growing tension and threats, dispossession and violence that harm the Zapatista territory of the town of October 6 in the Caracol of Jerusalem, at the hands of inhabitants of Palestine.”

This attack, he assured, “is not an isolated event, but part of a war that intensifies day after day against the base communities of the Zapatista National Liberation Army (EZLN), opening the doors to armed repression and incursion of criminal, paramilitary or narco-paramilitary groups, while governments look the other way with complicity in their actions.”

He considered that “we are going through one of the darkest times in our recent history.” For this reason, they demanded “an end to the war against the Zapatista peoples and against the indigenous peoples of Mexico.”
