Guanajuato.- In the last five years, 673 people reported to the State Attorney General’s Office have been victims of scam or fraud through a mobile messaging application such as Whatsapp O Messenger.
In response to a request for information, the Prosecutor’s Office detailed that the cases occurred between January 1, 2017 and January 3, 2022, on average almost one scam every three days.
Complaints skyrocketed last year; nothing else in Leon, Celaya and San Miguel de Allende 199 were registered.

During the first three days of this year, in Celaya, Leon and Cortazar the most recent scams occurred, reported the State Attorney’s Office.

León leads WhatsApp fraud complaints
Lion It is the municipality with the most cases, with 174 investigation files in 5 years.
In 2021 there were 79, 67 in 2020 and in 2019 another 17, in 2018 and 2017 there were 4 and 6 investigations respectively.
Celaya ranks second in the five years, accumulated 170 complaints.
In 2019 there were 59 cases, it dropped to 30 in 2020 and in 2021 there were 72 cases, before these the Prosecutor’s Office barely registered 8 cases.

During 2021 the cases skyrocketed and 48 were accumulated, previously in 2020 there were 29, in 2019 another 25 and in 2018 and 2017 26 folders were opened each year in that municipality.

In total, 21 municipalities of the entity registered instant messaging fraud.
The folders are made up of complaints before the Public ministrybut the progress of the investigation determines if there is a crime or if the crime is something else.
The Prosecutor’s Office is unaware of account thefts
After the reports presented by AM about theft of personal mobile messaging accounts such as WhatsApp O Messenger for scams and fraud, the State Attorney General’s Office indicated instead that it does not have open investigations for the theft of accounts.
“No record of investigations initiated by intrusion, theft of personal accounts of WhatsApp or identity theft in this way,” said the State Attorney General’s Officethrough another response requested by the Transparency Law.
