One of the brightest symbols of communism in our country awaits its future.
Friday will be a non-school day for students in Kazanlak. Voting sections will be open in schools as a local referendum on the Buzludzha monument will be held on Sunday 17 November. Residents of the municipality must answer “yes” or “no” to the question: Do you support Kazanlak Municipality to receive and use property – private state property “Monument House” on Mount Buzludzha free of charge for 10 years?”.
The municipality wants to turn the building into a real tourist destination, taking advantage of its worldwide popularity and to stop the destruction of the monument. The restoration of the roof and the provision of tourist access to the building will be carried out with European funds. The monument is visited by over 50,000 people a year.
“If communist symbols are restored, we are against it. If it is used as a tourist site, let money come into the municipality. Let the writers and artists of Kazanlak benefit from them”, said Dancho Marinov from the Union of those repressed by communism.
“It is by no means our desire to restore the monument as it was created. We want him to talk about the time in which it was built and the 35 years in which it was demolished,” said Mayor Galina Stoyanova.
“We have experience in cultural heritage management with more than 10 Thracian tombs. We believe that we can manage Buzludzha as well. This is a project for many years to come,” said Stoyanova.
