Findley is one lucky dog. The little Chilean terrier, white and brown, is among the first dogs in the world to be neutered without surgery.
The procedure took place at his home in Santiago while he was being held by his owner and receiving treats. After it was all over, he ran out as if nothing had happened.
There was no sedation or surgery, just a simple injection.
Leonardo Sáenz, a veterinarian and professor at the University of Chile who developed the vaccine called Egalitte, says that it works by blocking the hormone responsible for reproduction and that it reversible.
“Because it is a hormone that releases gonadotropin, if it is blocked, we do not release gonadotropin and therefore we do not release sex hormones and yes the animal in a state of swallowing.” Saenz said.
The vaccine can be used in both males and females and costs about 50,000 Chilean pesos (about $50) and requires a prescription and evaluation by a veterinarian to see if the dog is a suitable candidate.
Sáenz said the product could also help spaying animals on a larger scale, as it is less invasive and less complicated than surgical spaying.
“In one injection it is much easier for you to vaccinate a larger number of animals, for example, if you need to control reproduction.” said Saenz.
The simplicity and potential of reversing neutering is what made Findley’s owner, Tamara Zamorano, choose the procedure.
“The other treatment, mowing, scared us a little,” Zamorano said. “Also, this is much simpler and reversible, so if we want to go over it later, waiting for the right moment, we can do it. “”, he noted.
Findley didn’t mention the procedure, but he passed out a bit during the injection. Later, he licked the vet’s hand and went about his day.
