The Montgó de Dénia scientific station will have a marine observatory that will study the 40 kilometers of coastline between the port of Oliva and the Cap de la Nau de Xàbia. The Generalitat Valenciana, through the General Directorate for Science and Research, will finance this project within the call “Thinkianazul: Joint Strategy for Research and Innovation in Marine Sciences.”
The main researcher will be the professor at the Universitat d’Alacant and coordinator of the Montgó scientific station, César Bordehore.
The observatory will analyze environmental, fishery and socioeconomic data. It will have a multidisciplinary team of researchers from the Universitat d’Alacant, the Politècnica de València, the Miguel Hernández University, the Geological Mining Institute and the CSIC. Researchers from the universities of British Columbia (Canada) and North Carolina (USA) will also collaborate.
This stretch of coast will be one of the best studied on the Spanish coast. The absorption of CO2 by the sea, the improvement of the quality of the waters and the oceanic seagrass meadow, marine biodiversity and coastal erosion will be investigated. A management model for sustainable professional fishing and nautical tourism will be proposed.
