They confirm the murder of a Cuban mother of seven children in Las Tunas – 2024-02-17 08:20:09

The feminist platform Yo Sí Te Creo in Cuba denounced the murder of a Cuban mother of seven children in the province of Las Tunas, this being the eighth feminicide confirmed during the first months of 2024.

According to information shared on social networks, the unfortunate crime was recorded on February 14, in the town of Omaja, in the municipality of Majibacoa. The victim was identified as Yusmila Mayo Ruiz, who was allegedly killed by her partner.

The independent platform, as well as the Gender Observatory of Alas Tensas magazine (OGAT) indicated that five of the seven children of the deceased were minors and still needed her.

The publication sent its condolences to the woman’s family and friends, regretting what happened and committing to denounce gender violence throughout the Island.

Additionally, the feminist platform indicated that there are two other murders that are being investigated, this to determine if they are added to the registry of femicides on the Island. The first allegedly occurred in the town of Esperanza, in Villa Clara, while the second is located in Becerra, also in the province of Las Tunas.

In the case of Yusmila Mayo, who was around 37 years old, it was learned that the aggressor initially managed to escape from the scene, but the official profile, which avoided using the word feminicide, proudly presumed that the subject had already been detained by the National Revolutionary Police (PNR).

Femicides in Cuba

It is important to remember that gender violence is a problem that has been reported most frequently in the Greater Antilles, and the Island closed 2023 with 88 of these crimes.

According to numbers compiled by feminist platforms, between 2019 and 2023, 207 of these crimes have been recorded.

On multiple occasions, these women’s organizations have made it clear that the lack of transparency on the part of the Castro authorities makes it difficult to keep an accurate count of the femicides that have occurred in Cuba, which is why citizen complaints play a crucial role in time to make these cases visible.
