Urges the nations of Latin America to remain united, to demonstrate that they can contribute to facing the challenges of global health

The Secretary of Health, Jorge Alcocer Varela, highlighted the coordinated and “rigorous” work between Mexico and Argentina, which allowed a year ago to consolidate the release of the first Latin American vaccine against COVID-19.
The official stressed that this fact demonstrated that the nations of the region can contribute to face the challenges of global health.
Alcocer led the anniversary ceremony of the authorization of the biological by the Federal Commission for the Protection against Sanitary Risks (Cofepris).
At the event, he warned that it is time to continue controlling SARS-CoV-2 and prepare for a next pandemic or its continuation, which is not over yet.
Union make force
The Secretary of Health added that Latin America has the capacity to expand local production and reduce gaps in access to vaccines and other supplies.
However, he said, they have only produced four percent of the supplies used during the health emergency.
Despite this, he welcomed the fact that the project is carried out with Argentina, Cofepris and thea National Administration of Drugs, Food and Medical Technology (ANMAT).
Health surveillance will continue
Alcocer said that the Cofepris Analytical Control and Coverage Extension Commission (CCyAC) is consolidated as a bulwark of health protection in our country.
He also reported that this Commission will continue to promote science and health surveillance for the timely detection of diseases.
“Today we celebrate a historic event, a sign of the extraordinary capabilities of science and will, but also a sign of the commitment of the people who work in this agency,” said the head of Cofepris, Alejandro Svarch Pérez.
In addition, it recognized more than 150 people from different administrative units of Cofepris who were involved in the release of vaccines.
He promised to strengthen the local production of health supplies and technologies and national scientific and regulatory capacities to help the region prevent serious consequences in future health emergencies.
