During the morning of Sunday, the ”Pet Wellness Clinic” was held, where vaccines and microchips were applied to 1,200 animals between dogs and cats, it was a free event organized by the El Paso Department of Animal Services .
The day began at 8:00 a.m. and was scheduled to end at noon, however, due to high demand and for all the people who lined up to be attended to, the event was extended for another hour and ended at 1:00 a.m. pm, in the same way initially it was contemplated to apply a thousand vaccines and it was increased to 1,200.
“We said we were going to vaccinate 1,000 pets, but because of the huge response from the community, we passed that goal and gave 1,200 pets vaccinated and microchipped, even when we missed our scheduled closing time of 12:00 p.m. we continued to provide the service to everyone who was in line,” he said of the Department of Animal Services management and handling unit.
Dogs received the parvo/distemper vaccine, while cats received a vaccine against feline viral rhinotracheitis, calicivirus and panleukopenia (FVRCP), both species were eligible for microchipping.
“The vaccinations that we administer are very important because of the diseases that we see here in the El Paso area, and the microchips are important because they are the first line of defense when a pet is lost or taken, it gives us the ability to give back the pet to the owners,” he added.
Kilometer-long lines of vehicles carrying one or more pets could be seen to receive vaccinations and microchips.
The event was held in collaboration with the Petco Love and 24PetWatch organizations that supported with vaccines, and 50 volunteers and staff from Animal Services also participated. Dogs had to be on a leash and cats had to be in a cage or something similar, they had to be older than six weeks to receive vaccinations.
