they burn coal in their lodgings for warmth and end up in hospital

A man and a woman have been hospitalized in a “worrying” state after this carbon monoxide poisoning. Their six-month-old baby, who was in the accommodation with them, has also been hospitalized but his life is not in danger.

While attempting to warm up, they self-asphyxiated. A couple living in an apartment in Clermont-Ferrand (Puy-de-Dôme) was hospitalized in the night between Sunday 11 December and Monday 12 December, following carbon monoxide poisoning caused by a particularly dangerous homemade auxiliary heater .

“A Way to Warm Up”

The mountain reports that the police were called during the night by a woman who “reported being drugged”. Arriving at the accommodation indicated by the alleged victim, the carabinieri came across an unexpected scene: the two occupants of the apartment, including a woman who was carrying a small child, seemed “in a trance”.

The carabinieri, inspecting the premises, found in particular “a metal salad bowl containing smoking embers” and questioned the couple about it. According to La Montagne, the man would later explain “that it was a way to keep warm”. A few minutes later, the firefighters confirmed that “the two adults were seriously poisoned by carbon monoxide, probably given off by the small coal fire”.

Five other children of the couple were in a second home, “left to themselves”

In the meantime, the couple was then transported to the nearest hospital, while their six-month-old child in less serious conditions was cared for in another institution. The newborn was quickly out of harm’s way, but according to La Montagne, the conditions of her parents were deemed “worrisome” enough to justify a transfer to the Édouard-Herriot hospital in Lyon (Rhône).

The regional newspaper also specifies that before being hospitalized, the couple informed the police that their other five children were in a second apartment located in Chamalières, on the outskirts of Clermont-Ferrand. “Delivered to themselves”, the five minors, aged between 5 and 11, were looked after by the police, before being “placed in an orphanage”.
