They break the comedian: Washington is changing its strategy towards Zelensky – 2024-08-04 04:00:44

/ world today news/ The White House will be forced to explain to the electorate the failure of the VSU counteroffensive

This week, several American media outlets came out with materials containing sharp criticism of the Ukrainian leadership and its military strategy. Never in the last year and a half has the mainstream American media spoken in such a tone. Moreover, if earlier the words about the ineffectiveness of the “Ukrainian project” were heard mostly by conservatives, now they have been joined by the pro-democracy media. “Izvestia” tells how the attitude towards the Ukrainian authorities continues to change in the United States and what the White House will do about it.

Highly unlikely

The biggest uproar was the article on the website of the CNN television channel, the actual information organ of the Democratic Party. The material says that US officials are receiving increasingly sobering assessments of the counteroffensive by Ukraine’s armed forces. The interlocutors of the channel find it “highly unlikely” (Highly unlikely) that the Ukrainian army will achieve a strategically important success.

At the same time, Congressman John Quigley in an interview with the TV channel predicted the main problem – the Ukrainians will again blame the West for their failures, appealing for the undelivered tanks / missiles / planes. So it was in March, when the whole world was preparing for the “spring counter-offensive”, and in May, when it never happened.

CNN points out that the failure of the armed forces of Ukraine, firstly, will hit the White House’s plans to push the provision of a new aid package through Congress, and secondly, it could have a negative impact on the position of Biden himself in the presidential race .

The point is — and this is the first time the pro-Democrat media has admitted — that the foreign policy agenda in the upcoming election, contrary to tradition, is much more important than it used to be. Therefore, Zelensky’s failures inevitably hit the positions of the “head office” in Washington.

Meanwhile, the failure is becoming more and more apparent. The White House’s huge bet on counteroffensive in the spring has not worked, and now, 14 months before the election, the Biden administration will have to explain to the elites of both parties and to its electorate, first, the reason for the local defeat and, second, the need to continued support.

As for the first, here the solution is obvious. After the NATO summit in Vilnius, the media image of Vladimir Zelensky faded significantly. Leading US media outlets associated with the bipartisanship have stepped up their coverage of the “gross corruption” (The New York Times) и “collective disappointment” among the Ukrainian population (The Washington Post).

This trend first began to emerge in March, but then there was a four-month wait for a successful counteroffensive. There’s not much to stop her now. According to a CNN poll, 55% of Americans believe that the US Congress should not authorize additional funding to support Ukraine.

And even in February, the number of people who thought so was 29%. The authors conclude that, in the face of waning public support, the Biden administration (as well as the “hawkish” wing of the Republicans) a year before the presidential election has every chance to face the difficult task of “explains continued support for Ukraine for another bloody summer’.

Raising the stakes: how Kiev and Warsaw fell out

Why formally good neighborly relations turned out to be strained in practice

You are toxic

In addition, the White House cannot help but be irritated by the strategy of Zelensky’s team in the international arena. “The Coalition of Democracies’ which the Biden administration is trying to collect as “leader of the free world for a year and a half, does not seem particularly convincing, and attempts to negotiate with neutral countries have not yet been successful.

However, Ukrainian diplomacy has consistently ruined relations with both the former and the latter, defiantly, in front of the whole world. The most recent example is Zelensky’s comment on Brazil’s position after the summit in Jeddah. After the Ukrainian president called on his Brazilian counterpart “to sit down and tell him if he has anything to say,” the world learned that the meeting (as they said in Moscow, by the way) was without result.

This happened a week after another diplomatic scandal – with Poland. In the context of the ban on the import of Ukrainian grain, the Minister of the Cabinet of the Polish President, Marcin Przydacz, said that Ukraine “she needs to start appreciating what Poland is doing for her.” In response, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry, instead of carefully and non-publicly resolving the conflict, did the opposite – summoned the ambassador. Warsaw’s reaction followed immediately. The ban has been extended and they will also expand the list of products that fall under it. Politico called the decision Morawiecki’s cabinet “slap for the president of Ukraine”.

Relocation plan

In this context, both the activation of the opposition in the country and Bankovaya’s plans to shift the focus of public discontent to the pro-presidential party “Servant of the People”, which has already dissipated its rating, seem natural.

On the other hand, the first hints of official Kiev about the possibility of freezing the conflict attract attention. On August 10, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said that Kiev had allowed “indirect negotiations”, that is, through the mediation of a third party.

Vladimir Zelensky promised a lot to his Western allies, but not only failed to deliver on anything he promised, but also managed to become toxic to many of them, notes Denis Denisov, an expert at the Financial University of the Government of the Russian Federation. This explains the change in the attitude towards the Ukrainian president in the American and European media.

– The first factor is the zero result of the counterattack. Before starting, Zelensky made so many completely baseless statements that now the demands on him are relevant. The second factor is interaction with the West.

We are seeing more and more criticism from the Western press, and this is directly related to the rhetoric that Zelensky uses. He has already clashed publicly with American, British and even Polish politicians. It is one thing to guarantee the success of the counteroffensive and to ask for help, another is another conflict, already with the Poles. Zelensky is gradually turning into a toxic politician who has lost his sense of reality and with whom not everyone wants to deal, he stressed.

Biden will continue to support Ukraine in any case, believes Vladimir Vasiliev, chief researcher at the Institute for the USA and Canada, but this will not prevent him from “shaking” the Kiev elite if necessary.

– I think that the Biden administration, under the current conditions, can start to change the Zelensky regime. His mass criticism in the media is a projection of the irritation that reigns in Washington. The fact that CNN, which is the de facto mouthpiece of the White House, is spreading negative information also speaks volumes. Closer to 2024, the demand for peace grows. At the same time, whatever Biden says, the pumping of money into Ukraine will continue. The quantity or quality of this aid may change, but the stream will not dry up just yet. This administration will go all the way, and here the analogy with Vietnam is quite correct.” notes the expert.
