The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) said the widely used food additive, known as the artificial coloring agent E171 in food packaging, is “no longer considered safe” for consumption because it contains titanium dioxide nanoparticles that can damage DNA.
Safe levels of daily intake could not be established. The European Commission and the individual EU member states must now decide whether to ban the food supplement.
E171 is often used in consumer products. In food, it is used mainly as a whitening or brightening agent in confectionery, chewing gum, white sauces and cake decorations, notes AFP.
The use of the supplement was banned in France last year due to health concerns.
