The International Triathlon Federation assured this Friday that the two athletes who died in the World Championships held here met the requirements to compete at an international level.
The British John Mark (57 years old) and the Mexican Roger Mas (79), belonging to the Age Group category in the sprint distance, died from a heart attack in separate incidents during the competition.
Mark succumbed in the running segment and Mas in the swimming segment, while they tried to complete the route of 750 meters by swimming, 20 kilometers by bicycle and five kilometers by running.
There is no age limit to compete. There is a quota per country, which is usually 10 in each age group, although if the organizing country is not filled with the maximum quota, it may be given some more places, the entity clarified.
These deaths cast a shadow over the celebration of the world event, which this weekend will put the best triathletes on the planet into action.
