Geronimo Ruizone of the leaders of the Association of Traditional Market Tenants of Chiapas (Almetrach), was murdered the morning of this Monday, April 17, in the city of San Cristóbal de las Casas. After the fact, groups of armed people have clashed in the northern part of the city, where the tenants and their followers live.
The assassinated leader controlled the sale in the craft market of Santo Domingo, the most important of that tourist place. The municipal president of San Cristóbal, Mariano Dúaz Ochoa, said that the homicide provoked a confrontation between the followers of the artisan and another armed group, in the north zone of that city.
In San Cristóbal de las Casas, public markets have been used by organized crime groups for the sale of weapons, drugs and pornography.
The clashes between the followers of Gerónimo Ruíz and the people they consider to be their adversaries have continued from 12:00 p.m. until Monday night.
Security forces such as the Mexican Army, National Guard, state and municipal police carry out a deployment but only on the periphery of the place of the confrontation.
The State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) reported that it initiated an Investigation Folder against the person or persons responsible for the crime of qualified homicide, committed to the detriment of a person who responded to the name of Gerónimo “N” while alive, which occurred on the streets of Galilea and Jerusalem, from the Los Nogales subdivision of San Cristóbal de las Casas, where a Volkswagen brand vehicle, GTI type, red in color, with Chiapas state license plates, which presented firearm impacts.
The agency assures that after the homicide, shots were fired “in the air” in the north-eastern area of the city, for which reason “elements of the Chiapas State Attorney General’s Office, in coordination with the Mexican Army, the National Guard (GN), State Preventive Police (PEP) and Municipal Police of San Cristóbal de Las Casas implemented security and deterrent devices to control the situation and guarantee the tranquility of the population.
Since the news of the murder, the population of San Cristóbal has locked themselves in their homes and shops have been closed.
