They ask the Board to reconsider the cold line in the Zamora school canteens

The Secretary of Education of the Union of the Leonese People asked the Junta de Castilla y León this Saturday to reconsider its commitment to the cold line and commit to the start-up of the kitchens in the dining rooms of the educational centers.

In 2014, the Ministry of Castilla y León prepared a report detailing that there are around 500 school canteens that feed around 40,000 diners daily, but in most schools there is no kitchen since they are committed to the cold line. However, according to a survey carried out by the Confederation of Federations of Associations of Fathers and Mothers of students in public schools in Castilla y León, 90 percent of families with children in school canteens prefer food prepared daily in the kitchen of the school.

After providing these data, the Leonese highlighted the “numerous” advantages that the implementation of these kitchens would have, which would create employment, “energizing the rural environment by supporting local production and facilitating the incorporation of young people into the world of work”, boost the local economy through the purchase of local products, reduce the carbon footprint “by not bringing food from large kitchens far away”.

Among these advantages, UPL also highlighted the lowering of costs “both in the reduction of food transport due to the rise in fuel prices and in the planning of menus”, the change in the modality of awarding companies for batches, so that “smaller companies will have the option of opting for the management of the dining room of a center and not a batch of centers”, fighting climate change through “appropriate waste management and the premium for local businesses ” and improve the quality of the food, since “although the raw material of the cold line is of quality, the difference in the final preparation is unquestionable”.

From the Secretary of Education of UPL they bet on “the quality of school services” which, in their opinion, must go through “personalized attention, reversing the situation with the hiring of kitchen services that allow to alleviate the current situation of deterioration in educational centers”.
