Quito. The police arrested on Tuesday Azhael Roldán, son of one of the leaders of the largest criminal and drug trafficking gang in Ecuador, Los Choneros, who is accused of money laundering.
Along with Roldán, five other people were arrested and charges will be filed in the next few hours, and vehicles, jewelry, electronic and communication devices, cash and documents were seized, the Prosecutor’s Office said on its X account, formerly Twitter. The operation was carried out during the early hours of the morning in the provinces of Guayas and Los Ríos.
The Prosecutor’s Office specified that the agents began the investigation in June after reports from the financial system about recurring, unusual and unjustified cash operations for the acquisition of goods and real estate, for which paper companies had been established.
This operation by the Public Ministry is part of the actions of the authorities to investigate the inner circle of the deceased Junior Roldán, father of the detainee, who at the time of his death would have left a fortune of about 18 million dollars in property, accounts and assets.
Junior Roldán gained notoriety when he created a gang in the service of Los Choneros, in which he became second in command after the violent death of some of its leaders.
Shot to death in Colombia last year, he was in prison until February 2023, sentenced for two murders, although the police identified him as responsible for the death of at least 20 people and for ordering brutal massacres since the beginning of 2021 in some controlled state prisons. by criminal gangs.
