Olympic officials in Switzerland have called on the federal government to release international athletes and officials from new quarantine rules that threaten the country’s World Cups.

People arriving from a growing number of Red List countries must undergo a mandatory 10-day quarantine in Switzerland to prevent the spread of the new coronavirus variant omicron. The list includes, for example, Canada, where alpine ski races are held in Lake Louise this week.

For example, Mikaela Shiffrin from the USA and Lara Gutová-Behramio from Switzerland will start the event. Slovak Petra Vlhová will not appear at the World Championships in Canada. The defender of the big globe will not compete in St. Moritz and Val d’Isere and will perform only in Courchevel, France, where a huge slalom will take place on 21 December.

“If travel restrictions and quarantine rules remain in force, the organization of international sporting events in Switzerland will be jeopardized, if not directly impossible.” said Jürg Stahl, President of the Swiss Olympic National Committee.

Over the next three weeks, Switzerland will also host World Championships in cross-country skiing in Davos, ski jumping in Engelberg and cross-country skiing in Arosa. The country had to cancel the World Winter Universiade, which was to take place from 11 to 21 December in Lucerne, Switzerland, this week. University athletes from more than 50 countries, including Slovakia, were to take part in the event.
