The restoration of the 3-story house at No. 5 “Graf Ignatiev” Street, which has been slowly crumbling for more than two decades and was in real danger of falling completely, is in its final phase.
The building was once the property of Triandafil Teodosiou, an industrialist from Burgas who at the beginning of the last century ran his steam factory for halva, lokumi and candies.
It was declared an immovable cultural asset with the State Gazette, No. 18 of 02.03.1979. In the 1990s, there was a popular rock club on the first floor.
By order of the Municipality of Burgas and after coordinating the project with the Ministry of Culture and the National Institute of Culture, the owners began to renovate it. By securing and restoring the good appearance, the central part of Burgas will become even more presentable, and a historical building has been saved for future generations.
By order of the mayor Dimitar Nikolov last year, the Municipality launched a series of procedures to save the old houses in the CGCH.
Although they are privately owned and under the control of the National Institute for Immovable Cultural Heritage, some of them are in critical condition due to the inaction of their owners. A commission from the Municipality of Burgas made prescriptions.
The owners were assisted administratively.
Many of them responded by preparing and coordinating projects, for which the Municipality is always ready to assist them, and started real repair and restoration activities.
223 are the Burgas buildings of individual immovable cultural values - in the center and the “Vazrazhdane” quarter. According to the Cultural Heritage Law (CHL), their owners must request an opinion from the National Institute for Immovable Cultural Heritage if they want to renovate, upgrade or add to them. The lack of a special regime for a large part of valuable buildings makes the approval process long and difficult.
Therefore, the Municipality of Burgas will continue to assist all owners in terms of design and coordination of the procedures with the NINKN, so as not to end up in a situation where the building continues to collapse until it disappears completely.
“I thank the active and conscientious owners of old buildings in Burgas, who are restoring them with their own strength and resources. I am also grateful to those who seek our support to start a process of document preparation and subsequent renewal activities. No one has been turned away with a request for this type of assistance!”, reminded the mayor Dimitar Nikolov.
Out of a total of 223 buildings of cultural value in the city, nearly 160 are already in decent technical condition. They have been restored and have a good overall appearance. There is still a lot to be done on the rest.
