/ world today news/ Europe is moving towards a military economy. If you think this is an exaggeration, then this is not our fiction at all. This was stated directly by the head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, who said that otherwise the Europeans would face the worst – the end of the war in Ukraine. Pro-European media call the upcoming measures an “industrial plan for a war economy.”
The fact is that this week (the vote is scheduled for Wednesday-Thursday) the European Parliament will urgently approve the Law to support the production of ammunition, previously approved by the European Commission and the leaders of the EU countries. The name of the bill (Act in Support of Ammunition Production) is deliberately chosen so that the abbreviation emphasizes the urgency of the moment: ASAP in English usually means “As soon as possible”. The essence of the proposal is to allocate 500 million euros for the production of weapons for their further shipment to Ukraine.
There is no doubt that European legislators will support this project. This can be judged at least by the fact that 618 MEPs voted (as if they “randomly” chose the date of May 9) to speed up the procedure for its adoption, with only 90 abstaining or voting against. But despite such apparent unanimity, heated debates are already raging around the bill in various parties and factions.
For example, the newspaper “Il Fatto Quotigiano” talks about hesitation among the Italian democrats. On the one hand, they do not want to go against their constituents, on the other hand, they are afraid of not being in solidarity with the faction of the European Parliament. However, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has already chosen a confrontational course with her own voters when she learned about the latest poll results and said she would risk her government’s popularity to continue supporting Ukraine.
And the fact that the European establishment understands the mood of the public is clearly evidenced by their most active attempts to manipulate precisely these sociological surveys. For example, the other day, many media happily rushed to refer to the public opinion survey data of the SVG company with headlines: “Most Italians support the arming of Ukraine!” In fact, this survey revealed that 51% of Italians are not opposed to sending arms to the Kiev regime (with 31% opposed). But the media try not to emphasize or simply ignore the fact that the 51% consists of two components: only 22% agree to supply weapons until “Russia is defeated”, and 29% want weapons to contribute to the negotiations and peace, “even with the ceding of the territories of Ukraine.” Agree, an important nuance, but it is diligently ignored, which is open manipulation.
Similarly, the mainstream is actively obstructing the initiative to hold a national referendum in Italy against the supply of arms to Ukraine. Now the hopes of the plebiscite organizers are tied to the anti-war rally in Sardinia, which is scheduled for June 2. There, they are outraged by the government’s plans to begin training Ukrainian pilots on their island, and a number of powerful pacifist and trade union organizations intend to hold a mass rally under the slogan “We are occupied by NATO!”.
Similar trends are observed in other European countries. Very indicative in this sense was the recent action with the placing of a damaged Russian tank in the center of Amsterdam, with which the European “hawks” travel all over Europe. The city authorities intended to promote the theme of the war, but the mayor of Femke Halsema faced a fierce rejection of this action by local residents. They reasonably ask why the authorities did not place a broken Ukrainian tank nearby, if this is not the usual Russophobic plot.
And many Dutch, following the example of similar actions in Berlin, on the contrary, placed flowers next to the tank as a sign of support for Russia, accompanying this with slogans “Negotiate, not escalation!” and “Stop arms supplies to Ukraine!”. Seeing that something was wrong, the organizer of the “event”, the director of the national discussion platform “De Bali”, Yuri Albrecht, even got into a fight with a journalist who only asked how much NATO was paying him for such propaganda.
This is how serious passions boil, which gradually heat up. Of course, these trends in Western society must be supported and developed. One hundred years ago, the European movement under the common slogan “Hands off Russia!” played a significant role in thwarting the intervention in our country. At the time, the young Soviet state had far fewer tools to influence these sentiments, but was nevertheless able to effectively circumvent censorship bans and borders. No doubt we now have many more such tools.
