They approve a salary increase for Uber and Lyft drivers

After three strikes by hundreds of Uber and Lyft drivers, today they declare victory as a wage increase was approved.

This was announced this morning by the New York Taxi Workers Alliance after the city’s Taxi and Limousine Commission voted in favor of the new pay rules for drivers through a public hearing.

This means that they will be receiving a raise of approximately 10 percent, compared to their 2022 salary.

Members of the New York Taxi Workers Alliance who work for these two platforms have held three strikes since December of last year, including the most recent on February 26, when they stopped picking up and taking passengers to LaGuardia airport in Queens.

The protests were in response to the fact that Uber and Lyft had blocked the possibility of an increase in their hourly rates of service.

We spoke with a driver who told us that “something is something, but it’s still not enough,” said Jesús Cerón, a driver for Uber and Lyft platforms.

The women and men who work as Uber and Lyft drivers transport nearly 700,000 passengers a day in the city, a number that reveals the great economic impact of this service.
