December 23, 2020 – City Manager TC Broadnax announced Wednesday that Eddie Garcia will become the 30th Dallas Police Chief and the first Latino to lead the nation’s ninth largest police department.

“My story began when I was a child moving to a new city, learning to speak English in a community that promoted me to Chief. It is an honor to be received in one of the largest cities in the United States, for the second time as Boss, “Garcia said. “I am truly honored by the idea of wearing the DPD uniform and working alongside such an incredible group of committed men and women. Together, in company and collaboration with the Dallas community, we will meet the challenges of today and tomorrow.”
More than 55 community and business organizations participated in panel interviews of the top seven candidates.
“I am pleased to see this inclusive, equitable and transparent process culminate successfully with the hiring of Chief Garcia,” said Administrator Broadnax.
Garcia has a BA from the Union Institute and University. Since he began as an officer in February 1992 in San José, the tenth most populous city in the nation, he worked in the Patrol, Narcotics, Special Operations unit – MERGE (Mobile Emergency Response Group and Team); he was a patrol sergeant, night detective, and homicide investigator; and commanded the Community Services Division and the Special Investigations Unit.
During Chief García’s term in office in San José, he led initiatives to help build community trust, increase transparency, and adopt a fair, impartial, and constitutional policy. Among the department’s successes, they implemented basic Spanish at the police academy, launched a Facebook page in Spanish, and significantly increased minority recruitment.
