They announce 3 more weeks of blackouts in the capital of Ecuador – Diario La Página –

From this Monday, October 21 to Sunday, October 27, the capital of Ecuador will continue with blackout schedules. During the penultimate week of October there will be power outages in the capital for six to eight hours a day depending on the sector.

The Quito Electric Company defined two time slots, which will govern each zone. However, that entity noted that “improving hydrological conditions could reduce power outages within the scheduled period.”

It should be remembered that on October 17, 2024, on national television, President Daniel Noboa confirmed that the power cuts will continue for three more weeks.

Blackouts for the residential sector will be applied in two bands over the next three weeks. The week from Monday, October 21 to Sunday, October 27, the power outages will last 8 hours, the week from Monday, October 28 to Tuesday, November 5, the disconnections will last for six hours and the week from November 6 to 10, they will last 4 hours. Noboa assured.

Ecuador faces an energy crisis due to the lack of investment in the country’s hydroelectric system, in addition to the lack of rain that has forced the Government to apply daily blackouts on a national scale. The Secretary of Communication, Roberto Izurieta, said that Ecuador has had “an energy policy for the last 20 years that has not adapted to the climate crises.”

Added to the water problem in Ecuador was that Colombia stopped selling energy as a measure to deal with the serious drought associated with the El Niño phenomenon, which has Colombian reservoirs below 30 percent of their capacity.
