Four years before he dragged the couple and their 2-year-old baby away with his car Fervorthe 46-year-old driver was also involved in another serious traffic accident.
Mr. Lazaros describes exclusively to the Live News camera and Angelos Lampidis the abduction of his mother almost four years ago in Kalamaria, Thessaloniki.
“A meter before she went up the sidewalk, the other guy came and hit her.”
The same driver then, as now, was driving drunk.
“The Traffic Police had told us at the time that they had found an amount of alcohol in his blood”said Mr. Lazaros.
According to the police, from 2007 to 2020 the 46-year-old had been caught driving under the influence of alcohol five more times.
He has “haunted” her
It was February 6, 2020 when the 77-year-old woman found herself at the wheel of the 46-year-old, now, drunk driver. From that day began an endless Calvary.
“The blow was such that the shoulder disintegrated. He had been suffering for over a year”said Lazaros, son of the 77-year-old woman.
According to the 77-year-old’s son, the driver never tried to contact them. He never tried to apologize or care about the health of the woman he had hit with his car, while the 77-year-old still struggles with her nightmares.
“He is in pain and has many fears. He makes the circle so he doesn’t pass the spot and remembers the hit.”
The health condition of the couple remains critical
After the tragic outcome of the second pregnancy of the woman who was swept away in Thermi, her 2-year-old boy, who was fortunately only slightly injured, was discharged and is now in the arms of his grandparents without knowing what is happening to his parents and is looking for them.
While the couple continues to be hospitalized in a stable but critical condition at the Papanikolaou hospital, the authorities are examining the video footage from cameras located near the scene of the drift, analyzing frame by frame the way the 46-year-old drove his vehicle.
“When I learned about the new traffic accident, I was shocked. I wish people could make it. My mother had a saint”added the son of the now 81-year-old woman.
The driver is now in prison, having been remanded in custody for his act. Once again he does not admit that he was behind the wheel drunk, nor does he realize the harm he has caused.
“Doctors are afraid of pulmonary edema”
Antonis Kyrgiako, the 34-year-old’s cousin, spoke to LIVE NEWS about the case.
“Their health condition is critical but stable. The woman’s lungs have collected fluid and doctors fear she may develop pulmonary edema. The father is also serious, he has brain injuries. They give no chance that the doctors will wake up today or tomorrow. They are cautious but they are doing their best”.
Konstantinos Papazoglou, the family’s lawyer, also spoke on the show.
“The reason the driver was remanded in custody is that the new law of 2019 made it possible to charge him with a criminal charge.”
