It has been known for some time that Microsoft’s game consoles Xbox Series X and Series S support the acclaimed HDR video format Dolby Vision, but this has so far been limited to video and streaming services such as Netflix. Now Dolby announces that games can also be enjoyed in Dolby Vision. At the same time, Microsoft presents several game titles that use the Dolby format. Good news for both gaming and TV fans!
“More than 100 game titles” with Dolby Vision
According to Microsoft, there are now more than 100 game titles in Dolby format for Xbox Series X and S. These include:
– Ori and the Will of the Wisps
– Call of Duty Black Ops Cold War
– DiRT 5
– Psychonauts 2
– F1 2021
– Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy
– Microsoft Flight Simulator
– Gears 5
– Borderlands 3
– Immortals Fenyx Rising
– Metro Exodus
– The Division 2
In addition, there will be new titles where the Dolby format is in the game engine itself from the beginning. One of these is long awaited Halo Infinite which is scheduled to be released on December 8, 2021.
What is Dolby Vision?
Dolby is a well-known name in AV contexts, for surround sound formats such as Dolby Atmos. Dolby Vision, on the other hand, is about video, more specifically HDR (High Dynamic Range) which has higher contrast. Dolby Vision supports up to 12 bit color depths and contains so-called dynamic metadata that continuously provides the TV with instructions on the contrast ratio from scene to scene. For comparison, the standard HDR format (HDR10) uses 10 bits and a fixed set of metadata, which gives the TV less flexibility in how it handles different scenes.
Games in HDR format have so far been shown to involve some difficulties regarding the contrast ratio and how this works with different TVs. Therefore, there are hopes that the Dolby standard can provide better control over the viewing experience.
Of course, to use Dolby Vision, you must also have a modern TV that supports the format. So far, this means newer models from LG, Panasonic, Philips, Sony and TCL, among others. Samsung has so far chosen not to support the format in its TVs.
Note! Depending on the model, your TV may also need a firmware update to support Dolby Vision game graphics at 120 frames per second.
???? Time to step up your game ????
