In no other year in human history have people spent so much time streaming films and series as in 2020. Given the rapid development of streaming services, it would probably have happened last year one way or another, but the corona crisis with its Lockdowns has of course accelerated it significantly.

But even though there are more than enough legal offers these days on how to get access to numerous films and series for relatively low costs, Internet piracy is of course not dying out. It is not only streamed on Internet portals, there are actually still many people who use the BitTorrent file-sharing protocol to illegally download media. I always find the realization that millions of people still use BitTorrent astonishing.

The online portal Torrentfreak deals with these download trends and has been compiling the list of the most frequently illegally downloaded films and series of the year for years, whereby neither illegal streaming nor one-click hosters are counted due to impossible traceability, but only torrent downloads. Has been for seven of the past nine years “Game of Thrones” the undisputed leader of the illegal download charts. Only in their first year 2011 and 2018, when there was no new season, occupied “Game of Thrones” not last place.

Since 2019 the fantasy series is over and there is a new front runner: “The Mandalorian” of Disney+. The year before last rose “The Mandalorian” number 3 of the most illegally downloaded series in 2019, and I wrote at the time: “Due to the currently still limited availability of Disney + worldwide, the high ranking makes perfect sense. In the second season it will probably look very different.” Obviously I was completely wrong because although it was Disney+ already exists in many countries around the world, the Star-Wars-Series continue to be diligently downloaded. Second place also went to a series that is actually available via a legal streaming service: Amazons “The Boys”whose first season the year before last was not in the top 10. There are a total of four newcomers in the top 10, including two brand new series (“The Outsider” and “Star Trek: Picard”), a series that had no new season in 2019 (“Westworld”), and “The Boys”, which has not yet been placed in 2019. The full list can be found below:

1. “The Mandalorian”
2. “The Boys”
3. “Westworld”
4. “Vikings”
5. “Star Trek: Picard”
6. “Rick and Morty”
7. “The Walking Dead”
8. “The Outsider”
9. “Arrow”
10. “The Flash”

It is interesting how high the third is “Westworld”Season has placed. In its first year, HBO’s sci-fi series also landed at number 3, but slipped to number 8 with the second season. Last year it was enough for the top 3 again.

As in all previous years, there is none NetflixSeries among the ten. This is probably because the streaming provider already exists in so many households that there is no high “need” for illegal downloads for them Netflix-Series there.
