Due to the corona pandemic, cinemas had to accept some setbacks. Numerous films were not only postponed, but also came directly to various streaming services. That was not only the case in the first year of the pandemic, but also in 2021. How was the past year for the cinema industry? And which films did particularly well?
These were the most successful cinema films of 2021
the film promotion agency Germany (FFA) has published some figures for the past year. And as can be seen from this, the film, of all things, was able to win the hearts of the viewers, which was postponed by two years. “James Bond: No Time To Die” was originally supposed to come out in spring 2020, but ultimately didn’t start until the end of September 2021. Almost 6 million people watched Daniel Craig’s final adventure as 007. In second place is a Marvel flick that started in December. Some distance behind the most successful film of 2021 is “Spider-Man: No Way Home”, which sold 2.6 million tickets.
German films were also popular with cinema-goers last year. 2021 “The School of Magical Animals” with 1.3 million tickets sold the most popular German film. Compared to international films, it ranks 6th. Another German film is “Kaiserschmarrndrama”, which ranks 7th with a total of 1.1 million viewers.
However, the American film industry can still claim the largest market shares for itself. This is 54.7 percent with a total of 22.6 million tickets sold for US films. In comparison, the German film market has a market share of 21.7 percent.
And what is the situation of the cinemas?
In 2020 there was great interest in supporting the art and culture industry. For example, there were initiatives that allowed you to watch cinema ads. This helped the cinema around the corner financially.
Peter Dinges, board member of the FFA, gives at least a little all-clear: “German cinemas survived the second year of Corona relatively unscathed.” It is unclear whether this will remain the case in the future. Also, how the film industry has changed permanently as a result of the pandemic.
According to the FFA, the cinema stock in the Federal Republic is not damaged, it is said. And that despite faster availability of cinema films on streaming services and the massive failure in 2020 and 2021.
