In March, the Graz Schönau elementary school, in collaboration with the “Naturschwärmerei” and “Styria vitalis” associations, redesigned its schoolyard and sown a flowering meadow – from an observation point, the students can watch how everything grows; each class has one for twelve flowering bushes Partnership taken over. In the practical elementary school at Augustinum, a diverse permaculture school garden was created under the title “Mint and Mint”, which enables global learning, biodiversity, sustainability and self-efficacy to be experienced, touched and enjoyed. Two classes lasted more than two years everywhere for a long time. Externally at Klusemann, under the name “Klex Grün”, the development of a school garden, the greening of the school terrace and the development of gardening pedagogical concepts and their testing and implementation were the subject of lessons. For example, tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers were grown from seeds A Mediterranean garden is being created on the terrace. And at the oikos Sustainability Week in April, the program included workshops, lectures, talks and panel discussions on various sustainability topics.
What all four projects have in common: A five-member jury made up of representatives from the city of Graz and the environmental education center declared them to be the best submissions – so they won the City of Graz’s 2024 Environmental Prize. The prize money is 1,100 euros each.
