Basel Bridge agglomeration program with lift tower and e-charging station: These transport projects are supported in the Fricktal

13 measures from the municipalities of Kaiseraugst, Rheinfelden, Stein and Obermumpf are to receive a boost as part of the Basel agglomeration program. The largest sums are likely to go towards the 45 meter long steel-concrete composite bridge in stone and measures for traffic safety in the “Römerpark” residential area – an overview shows the measures that will be subsidized.

The Agglo Basel association coordinates the overarching and integrated planning of landscape, settlement and traffic in the perimeter of the trinational agglomeration of Basel. Every four years, the association submits a package of measures to the federal government for co-financing. This package includes 13 projects from the Fricktal as so-called A measures that are to be implemented between 2028 and 2032.

In Stein, a new access to the train station (in the picture on the right) is to be realized via a bridge and lift tower over the motorway.

The investment volume for these measures amounts to 16.645 million francs. If these were supported by the federal government at 40 percent, as in the fourth generation agglomeration program, this would be 6.658 million francs. An overview shows which measures should be implemented in the Fricktal communities.

With elevator and over a new bridge to the train station

In Stein A new pedestrian access to the train station is planned for 2.465 million francs. Commissioning is scheduled for 2029. A 45 meter long steel-concrete composite bridge is planned for pedestrian traffic. The new pedestrian bridge east of the existing underpass creates another, cost-efficient crossing option over the motorway. The community center and the development focus of Sisslerfeld therefore contain direct and attractive train station access, according to the Agglo report.

In addition to the bridge, the project will have a lift tower with an additional staircase. The lift located on the north side is used to overcome a height difference of around 14 meters. In order to protect the bridge from snow and ice formation, the entire structure – i.e. the bridge and the lift tower – is covered.

Between Obermumpf and Stein, the existing forest path is to be expanded into a paved cycle path over a distance of around 550 meters. The cycle path is intended to promote the use of bicycles as a means of transport to Stein train station, to the workplace in Sisslerfeld and to the new cantonal school in Stein. The road substructure should be improved and given a fine surface. Construction on the 577,500 franc project is expected to begin in 2027.

Defuse the risk of conflict from heavy traffic

In Kaiseraugst there are five projects that are to be realized. The most expensive, costing 3.95 million francs, is the upgrading of the Wurmisweg and Hirsrütiweg as well as the relocation and upgrading of the Challerenweg. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2029. The background is to increase security. The Wurmisweg and Hirsrütiweg are feeder roads for the Rinau industrial area and also for the Römerpark residential area. Truck traffic poses a great risk of coming into conflict with cyclists and pedestrians.

The bicycle and pedestrian routes are to be made safer by creating a second longitudinal pedestrian connection on the south side at Hirsrütiweg and new pedestrian crossings as well as adding new bicycle lanes. The width of the road should be optimized and the speed of private traffic should be reduced. In addition, the Challerenweg is to be rerouted: buses are now to be routed via Hirsrütiweg to their own route. This reduces travel time and makes driving more comfortable. In addition, pedestrian connections are to be improved and access to the forest is to be shortened. New bicycle lanes will also be created.

Also planned in Kaiseraugst are the construction of publicly accessible e-charging stations, the upgrading of Mühlegasse-Dorfstrasse, the upgrading of the Linerweg and Venusstrasse as well as two new covered bicycle parking facilities.

Most measures are funded in Rheinfelden

In Rheinfelden Six projects are identified as part of the fifth generation of the agglomeration program. The most expensive measure, at 1.65 million francs, is for the redesign of Bahnhofstrasse and Schützenplatz. This is necessary due to the redesign of the station square (bus station) with the relocation of the main connection for pedestrians to the east side of Bahnhofstrasse. The street space required for this affects part of the Schützenplatz and requires more extensive redesign of the terrain. This measure is completed by the inclusion of pedestrian connections via Schützenplatz to the east. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2029.

Furthermore, Geissgasse to Kupfergasse are to be upgraded for slow traffic and bus operations, the Quellenrain is to be operated in a one-way regime and pedestrian and motorized traffic are to be safely separated from each other. Also planned are a foot and cycle path connection between the SBB train station and the Augarten stop, the Quellematt foot and cycle path connection and the expansion of the bicycle parking spaces in the Schiffacker car park.
