If you have had difficulty paying your mortgage, rent, or utilities (related to COVID-19 or not), there are several agencies and organizations in North Carolina that can provide you with housing assistance.
As the end of the eviction moratorium nears, these programs can help you stay in your home. This list includes housing assistance programs throughout the state and in and around Charlotte, the Triad, the Triangle, and the mountains.
Various funds available on this list are specifically provided for people financially affected by the pandemic.

NC HOPE
The NC HOPE program provides rent and utility assistance for low-income tenants experiencing financial hardship due to the economic impacts of COVID-19.
NC HOPE assistance is available in 88 counties and excludes Buncombe, Cabarrus, Cumberland, Durham, Forsyth, Gaston, Guilford, Johnston, Mecklenburg, New Hanover, Union, and Wake counties.

Crisis Assistance Ministry

Cabarrus County Emergency Rental Assistance Program (ERAP)
The Cabarrus County Emergency Assistance Program provides rent and utility assistance for households experiencing financial hardship due to COVID-19. More information available at: cabarruscounty.us/resources/emergency-rental-assistance-program.
Gaston County ERAP
Assistance with rent and utility costs to families financially affected by the COVID-19 crisis for residents of Gaston County. Those interested should call 704-862-7901 and leave a message with their name and phone number so that a social worker will return the call within 48 hours to schedule an appointment and provide more information on income limits and other program criteria.
Union County ERAP
Union County’s emergency rental and utility assistance program. Open to tenants who reside in the county and have been financially affected by COVID-19. Public services also include garbage collection and internet. More information is available by calling 704-283-3500 and at your website.

Guilford County Emergency Rental and Utilities Assistance Grant Program
Guilford County Resident Emergency Rent and Utility Assistance Grant Program due to COVID-19. More information is available by calling 336-641-3000 and at your website.
Forsyth County and Winston-Salem ERAP
Rent and utility payment assistance for tenants financially impacted by COVID-19 in Winston-Salem and Forsyth County. More information available at Forsyth.cc/ERAP and 1-855-838-6776.
Greensboro ERAP
Tenants within the Greensboro city limits can apply for up to 12 combined months of assistance with paying rent and paying utilities due to COVID-19. To submit an application you must register on the portal at bit.ly/3lt6sie.

Durham ERAP
Durham County and City residents financially impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic can apply for help paying rent and utilities. DurhamERAP.dconc.gov/cares and by calling 919-560-8000 (Option 7).
Johnston County ERAP
Johnston County residents can receive mortgage, rent, and utility assistance with funds from the CARES Act. You can call 919-989-5320 or visit their website for more information.
Wake County Emergency Rental and Utility Assistance (House Wake!)
Rent and Utility Assistance for Wake County Residents for Households Economically Impacted by COVID-19.

Buncombe County:
Buncombe County Housing Assistance Program
Rental, mortgage or utility housing assistance available to those affected by losses related to the pandemic. To apply, fill out the form and return it to the Buncombe County Health and Human Services Department (40 Coxe Ave, Asheville, NC 28802) or call 828-250-5500 to begin the application process.
Buncombe County Property Tax Assistance Program
Financial assistance to qualified homeowners to pay their property taxes. Applications for the aid program will be available beginning August 1 through November 15. More information will be available at BuncombeCounty.org in August.
