These places gave a deep insight

Dresden – Numerous visitors went on the Open Monument Day in search of traces and visited places, buildings and treasures on land and water.

Archaeological excavations on the former Robotron site, graves in the New Israelite Cemetery or new details on the continued operation of the Lingner Castle: 64 monuments in the city opened their doors that usually remain closed.

One example is the historic “Waltraut”. The old Elbe barge was built in 1913, was in use until reunification and has been moored in Alberthafen ever since. The old lady is almost 65 metres long and transported up to 755 tonnes of coal, grain or beets along the Elbe in eleven holds.

The motorless ship was pulled upstream by a sidewheel tugboat, while a sail helped downstream.

After being hit by a bomb in April 1945, the “Waltraut” sank, was salvaged and repaired. Until 1990, it continued to transport goods to Dresden.

The Ständehaus (built in 1901) on the Schlossplatz was opened “digitally” (via videos). Initially used as a state parliament building, it was badly damaged in 1945 and then converted to house the State Office for Monument Preservation. Since 2001 it has also housed the Higher Regional Court with seven halls.
