“Do you know who I am?”
He really had them all, Larry King (1933-2001), who recently died at the age of 87. In thousands of interviews, the US talk show host spoke to presidents, comedians, sports stars, music legends, world-famous entrepreneurs and icons of the Hollywood dream factory. With so many conversations, there should always be excitement. Here are a few moments from Larry King’s career that caused a stir for a variety of reasons.
Accused of murder
Sharon Tate (1943-1969) was killed by members of the Manson family. In a later conversation with Debra Tate (68), the sister of the actress, King explained that the director Roman Polanski (87), then husband of Sharon Tate, had murdered her. A complete faux pas, of course.
According to King, his worst interview was in 2009 when he spoke to the Libyan dictator Muammar al-Gaddafi (1942-2011). The talk show host asked about the worst mistake the dictator had ever made. The latter then stated that he admitted that there had been some mistakes, including being overly enthusiastic about possession of nuclear weapons.
Discontinued cult sitcom
Larry King didn’t realize what a mega-hit the “Seinfeld” series was, which is still one of the most successful and influential sitcoms to this day. Speaking to actor and comedian Jerry Seinfeld (66), King assumed that the show had been canceled. “Do you think I’ve been deposed? […] Is this still CNN? “, The indignant Seinfeld asked and added:” Do you know who I am? “
For an interview with Lady Gaga (34), King had to take criticism in 2010. He asked casually about the singer’s state of health: “There was a story about lupus or something like that. Do you have lupus?” The interview should be legendary, especially for many fans, as Gaga had imitated the talkmaster’s outfit and called him “King Larry”.
Inappropriate questions and the late Beatle
A conversation between Larry King and model Carrie Prejean (33), the former Miss California USA 2009, was interrupted by the latter when she lifted her microphone in the middle of a conversation and accused the talk show host of asking “extremely inappropriate” questions.
In 2007, King John Lennon’s (1940-1980) widow Yoko Ono (87), George Harrison’s (1934-2001) wife Olivia Harrison (72), Paul McCartney (78) and Ringo Starr (80) welcomed for an interview. With so many names from the Beatles community, you can get confused. So it happened to the talk show host that he addressed Starr by the name George.
Also in 2007, King spoke to Tammy Faye Messner (1942-2007), who was severely emaciated at the time and the former wife of the scandal television preacher Jim Bakker (81). She spoke of her fight against incurable cancer. The appearance on “Larry King Live” was her last. She died just hours after being admitted. King said shortly after, “She passed away peacefully. Everyone who saw her on our show this week knew she was running out of time.”
