Peace palm
Cheerful, such a tropical palm in the house, but you have to be careful with a cat, because the palm is poisonous. This also applies to other pets and people. Various parts of the peace palm, such as the roots, leaves and seeds, contain cycasin. This toxic substance can cause liver failure. If the substance enters your pet’s nervous system, your cat could have a stroke.
Lelies
Beautiful to look at, but a sneaky enemy for your feline friend: the lily. The whole plant, including the pollen, is very poisonous and dangerous to cats. If your cat ate a lily or ingested pollen (through its fur, for example), go to the vet as soon as possible. Kidney failure occurs within 12 to 36 hours and in the worst case the animal dies after 3 to 5 days.
Monstera
A regular guest in many living rooms is the popular Monstera, or the hole plant. If your cat bites the plant, poisonous crystals are released that cause all kinds of nasty ailments, such as vomiting, swollen airways, decreased appetite and swallowing problems. This can last for two weeks. If your loyal friend has eaten a large piece of the plant (several times), it is important to go to the doctor. Kidney failure, vomiting and even a coma and death are lurking.
Bulb flowers (tulips, daffodils, crocuses, amaryllises)
The bulbs in particular are poisonous, but the flowers are also not healthy for your four-legged friend. It varies by type and quantity, but in general eating bulbous plants causes diarrhea and vomiting in your cat.
Aloe Vera
As beneficial as aloe vera is for humans, cats and dogs can get sick from this tropical plant. The leaf of the aloe vera plant contains a poisonous juice, which animals get gastrointestinal complaints. If your cat takes a bite from the leaf, it can vomit, get diarrhea and become lethargic.
Fortunately, if you bring green into your home this spring, you have plenty of cat-friendly options. Plants such as the pancake plant, banana plant, bromeliad, calathea and coconut palm, for example, go well with your cat.
