these funny cyclists on their funny solar bikes

There is the Tour de France and the SunTrip, a 2500 kilometer Grenoble-Lyon loop via the Alps. A cycle loop, a sporting challenge made accessible to all thanks to solar energy. This trip to the sun can be followed on France 3 Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes and on our networks.

They left Grenoble a few days ago. 35 bikes for a little tour in the Alps. A little tour of more than 2000 km which will bring them back to Lyon on July 8 after having chained passes and countries. The U-turn will be in Slovenia. The youngest, Emile, is in his twenties. The oldest, Paul is in his seventies. Emile pedals to challenge himself, Paul to participate. Alongside them, Cécile and Victor, 50-year-old ecologists who have spent all their holidays to sweat on their bikes, and many other participants to discover on our channel.

And, if they are not all crazy about bicycles, they all share this traveler’s mantra: freedom. Or rather freedoms. That of the traveler and, in the case of the Sun Trip, that of freedom and total energy autonomy.

The idea germinated in the head of Florian Bailly. The businessman is also an avid cyclist. His own little tours have taken him to China, Japan, Turkey, Kazakhstan. Often alone, often by the strength of his calves until the day he became interested in a Savoyard innovation: the solar bike! A revelation and invaluable help on stages of several hundred kilometres.

Imagine a bike trip on the Vendée Globe Terrestrial mode

It was during one of his long trips that the idea of the Sun Trip was born: “I was bored in western China. I was alone and I thought it would be much more fun if there were several of us. So I imagined an event with a solar bike, in the Vendée Globe mode. Well, that’s as simple as that !”

The first Sun Trips are international: China, Kazakhstan. This year, in view of the state of the world, the perimeter has tightened because: “solar is not just for going farsaid Florian, a smile in his voice. The idea is also for the race to be as inclusive and intergenerational as possible.”

On machines that are often homemade, the participants are, in their own way, ambassadors of solar power and eco-mobility. Because the Sun Trip, beyond its sporting dimension, is a showcase for new forms of mobility.

An adventure of which France 3 Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes is a partner.
