With a few small steps we can greatly improve our network.
Nowadays, it’s almost impossible to imagine a family without Wi-Fi. Wireless options are slowly being added to all devices, let’s talk about phones, consoles or even smart bulbs. By 2022, network devices from service providers will also support one of the standards without exception. In most cases, this is only covered by “AC”, but in addition to fiber optic connections, gigabit, the compatible ONT-Router combination “AX” is also not uncommon. Despite this, it is advisable to buy your own router in addition to the modem, but we can make up for the intermediate period with the devices supplied.
The most critical point, besides the Wi-Fi version number, is the signal strength, as it determines our download / upload speed, network delay (ping) and possible packet loss. Of course, we can’t even exceed the subscribed speed, but a near gigabit connection can be useful on an internal network.
Let’s see how we can improve the signal strength!
A router correct positioning, channels
Wireless signals have a limited range, especially with modern 5 GHz standards. Every single wall or large object obstructs valuable information. That is why we should place the router in a place in the house or apartment where most of the devices can receive an adequate signal. By default, it covers the center of the building, but in individual cases it can also be in a different location. It is also worth considering the channels used by routers installed in the surrounding apartments and houses. Most routers automatically detect it and switch to the cleanest channel, but sometimes we have to set it manually in the menu.
Antennacere
Many of them router it comes from the factory with smaller antennas than needed. These are designed to scatter the signal in all directions, but we may not always need them. In the case of units that can be equipped with a replaceable antenna, we should think about purchasing more powerful directional antennas.
Get a repeater
There are situations where neither a clear channel nor a stronger directional antenna can help. Fortunately, there are already solutions for this, you can find them on store shelves under the name “repeater”. The repeaters it works much like how routers work, but instead of generating a completely new signal, they relay an existing network. In many cases it is enough to free them an outlet, the rest will be solved after a few settings. It is worth checking that the standards match between the router and the repeater (s).. After all, our speed can deteriorate significantly if a much weaker router, for example N, is placed next to the AX router.
Firmware update and replacement
Routers are basically (usually) mini computers with an ARM processor. That is why it can be important to keep the firmware on them. In many cases, manufacturers provide branded routers with new software even years after their release, so it’s always worth visiting their official websites.
Factory firmware replacement can also be considered for several models, which can be used to invoke hidden or previously unauthorized functions. In this case we often have the opportunity to increase the signal strength. Such a project is a DD-WRT or just that OpenWRTbut it is important to know that not all routers are supported.
Summary
From the tips above, it may have become clear that we still have some leeway even after purchasing the router, but we can still say that miracles cannot be done. Nowadays, especially with internet connections greater than 500 megabytes, it is not worth choosing a (main) router under AX, as these already confidently bring speed when paired with suitable clients. In many cases, the ping / latency value is already close to cable solutions. Correct placement is important, but in extreme cases, installing a repeater can be of great help in larger homes and apartments.
