These coins are worth a lot! See commemorative coins issued by the NBP. Do you have any of them? Check if you have them at home

The issue of collector and commemorative coins is an excellent opportunity to honor important historical events, figures, culture, science and traditions of Poland. Collector coins are made of the highest quality gold and silver, and are often made more attractive by adding elements from other materials, such as amber, striped flint or glass, or by using additional techniques, such as pad printing, UV printing, selective gilding or laser matting. Each coin is packed in a capsule and placed in a collector’s case, which is accompanied by a certificate. It is an excellent opportunity for collectors to expand their collections and for all those interested in the history and culture of Poland to commemorate important events and people. In Poland, the issue of coins is the responsibility of the National Bank of Poland, which since 1995 regularly issues several new coins each year referring to contemporary history or to historical figures or events.

According to the National Bank of Poland, commemorative coins in the circulation standard and the face value of PLN 5 are made of the MN 25 alloy (ring) and CUAl6Ni2 (core).

“All collector and commemorative coins issued by the NBP are legal tender in Poland. Their purchasing power is determined by the face value placed on them. Regardless of the face value and the sale price set at the NBP, collector coins have their collector value, which is determined” – we read on the website of the National Bank of Poland.

Narodowu Bank Polski informs that the issuance plans may change.

The reverse is the side of the coin with the opposite motif to the main motif on the obverse. The reverse of the coin often contains information about the coin’s denomination, date of issue, national coat of arms or other motifs related to the theme commemorated by the coin.

The obverse is the side of the coin with the main motif or image that symbolizes the issue of the coin. The obverse of the coin usually contains information such as the name of the issuer, the name of the commemorated person, the year of issue and other symbols related to the theme of the coin.

In turn, the coin’s tail is the common name for its reverse, which in Poland is associated with the tradition of tossing coins during the draw. In fact, both the obverse and reverse of a coin have equal meaning and value, and which one is called a tail depends on the custom of the country or region.

“Heads” and “tails” are two different draw results that are usually used in coin-operated games. “Heads” means that the coin fell on the obverse, i.e. the side with the image, while “heads” means that the coin fell on the reverse, i.e. the side opposite to the obverse.

In Poland, the “eagle” is the customary term for the result of the draw, when the coin falls on the obverse, on which there is an image of the eagle, i.e. the state emblem. On the other hand, “heads” is the customary term for the result when the coin lands on the reverse, i.e. the side with the denomination, date or other motif placed on this side.

The phrase “eagle” and “tails” comes from the history of minting coins, where the image of an eagle was placed on one side, and the image of “tails”, i.e. the coat of arms of a city or country, on the other side. Today, these terms are primarily used in the context of games of chance or coin tossing for decision making.

The word “heads” is a term used in everyday language to describe one side of a coin as opposed to the other side, which is called “heads”.

The term probably comes from the Russian language, where the other side of the coin is called “решка” (rieska). The word “tails” in Polish is derived from the noun “reszta”, and its diminutive form was created by adding the suffix -ka to it.
