these cities where prices have increased the most in 2021

In 2021, car rental prices increased by 43% compared to 2019, all destinations combined, and by 49% only in France, according to the results of a study carried out by the online comparator Carigami, and relayed by BFM. The average price for a daily rental was 46 euros, all destinations combined, compared to 32 euros before the health crisis.

This increase in prices is primarily due to a shortage of vehicles. “The global shortage of electrical components has led to a decline in vehicle manufacturing. New cars are neither manufactured nor delivered,” says Carigami. Result: the fleet of rental vehicles was reduced by 40% in 2021 compared to 2020, generating an increase in prices because demand exceeded supply. But the consequences of the health crisis have not been felt everywhere in the same way. The increase in car rental prices was more pronounced in tourist destinations. Market overview in 2021.

Which French destination recorded the most car rentals?

In France, it is logically in the capital that the greatest number of cars were rented in 2021. The prices are in the French average, with a rate of 49 euros per day – for a national average of 48 euros -, i.e. an increase of 42% compared to 2019.

Behind Paris, it is in Ajaccio and Nice that the largest number of rented cars has been identified by Carigami. The rates there are respectively 52 euros and 51 euros per day. But in these two destinations, prices rose sharply compared to 2019: +101% in Ajaccio and +84% in Nice.

Lyon and Bastia complete the top 5 cities with the most car rentals in 2021.

A more marked price increase in Corsica

It is in Corsica that the rise in car rental prices has been most obvious. In Ajaccio, rates have increased by 101% compared to 2019, with an average rate per day of 52 euros in 2021. The highest daily rate is in Figari, with 55 euros, which represents an increase of 98% compared to 2019. In Bastia, prices have also increased by 94%.

And abroad ?

For destinations outside France, “the market has focused on Southern Europe” notes Carigami in its study. “The opening of the Canadian and US borders, for the autumn-winter season, did not cause any significant increase in reservations for these two destinations that are very popular with the French”. It is therefore in Italy that the French rented the most cars in 2021.

On the other side of the Alps, the average price is 55 euros per day for a car, which represents an increase of +104% compared to 2019.

Portugal, Spain and Greece follow in the ranking. In these three countries, the rates are lower than in France: respectively 31, 34 and 44 euros per day. However, these prices are also up sharply compared to 2019.

The most significant price increases were recorded in Italy (+104%), Spain (+85%) and Croatia (+62%).
