These branches should close – great overview

At Douglas, a renovation is on the way: The perfumery chain relies on online business – and wants to close many branches. These businesses are affected.

The Douglas perfumery chain is renovating – and closing 500 of its 2,400 branches across Europe, the majority of them in southern Europe. The company announced this at the end of January. But around 60 of a total of 430 Douglas stores are also expected to close in Germany.

“The branches are closing at different times in the period from the end of May 2021 to the end of April 2022,” said a Douglas spokeswoman on t-online. “Our customers and all affected employees will be informed personally by us about the closings.”

Douglas had already announced last year that it would be putting the branch network to the test. The corona pandemic accelerated the change because it ensured that even more customers migrated to the online shops. In many countries, non-grocery stores have been closed to contain the pandemic.

The fashion trade in particular is under pressure, and many retailers need government aid or are on the verge of collapse. Douglas will continue to rely on brick-and-mortar stores in spite of the online growth, emphasized Douglas boss Tina Müller: “We believe in the branch.”
