Take medicine and don’t touch your eyes, speed up recovery after cataract surgery
REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BUTON — Laser eye cataract surgery (phacoemulsification) is said to be the most effective treatment for cataracts. Generally, this procedure is short and there is minimal risk of complications. However, you may experience some side effects after undergoing cataract surgery.
An ophthalmologist at Siloam Hospitals Buton, Dr. Yosylina Pramudya Wardhani Sp.M., said that after cataract surgery, the eye organs will generally feel uncomfortable, or appear red for several days. This is normal during the healing period. Usually, these symptoms will disappear and the patient’s vision will return to clear within 6-8 weeks.
“Therefore, do not wash or touch your eyes or swim. Avoid dust or smoke, even straining, coughing or sneezing that is too strong. And immediately contact a doctor if there are other symptoms such as infection, nausea and vomiting, severe pain, excessive light sensitivity,” said Dr. Yosylina Pramudya Wardhani Sp.M., through the live Instagram application on health talk education entitled:” Cataract Surgery with Laser”, Sunday (19/12).
Continuing her education, Yosylina also explained that the recovery process after cataract surgery going well, there are several treatment steps that can be taken, namely taking medication regularly accompanied by a minimum of three days of rest and regular check-ups with the doctor.
Phacoemulsification
Phacoemulsification is eye cataract surgery through laser surgical technique which is performed by removing the front part of the eye lens without damaging the posterior capsule. This procedure is safe and painless. After phacoemulsification, the doctor will place an artificial lens (IOL) so that the eye can see more clearly.
Yosylina Pramudya Wardhani said, cataracts attack the lens of the eye which can reduce vision function slowly without pain, for example, ghosted vision when looking far away, even color vision fades like being covered in fog and some complain of glare when looking at bright places.
Through Phacoemulsification, the cataract laser focuses on Ultrasound which is used to provide vibration and heat so that it can destroy the ‘nucleus’ and is emulsified, which sucks the destroyed nucleus. Generally, the duration of surgery is relatively short with small incisions that do not need to be sutured.
