There are a few surprises among the most successful German YouTube videos in 2020. We’ll show you the entire top ten.
The top trending YouTube videos also reflect what has been on our minds this year: the coronavirus. But in addition to explanatory videos about the virus, a tutorial on making masks and a home workout so as not to lose shape due to closed gyms, some surprises have landed in the top ten.
Note: The top ten trending videos refer to the number of views in a short time and which catapulted the videos into the YouTube trends. The number of total calls is not decisive here.
May 1st Thi Nguyen-Kim – Corona is only just starting
The scientist and journalist Mai Thi Nguyen-Kim took first place with the video “Corona is just getting started” on her channel “maiLab”. In the video, which she uploaded at the beginning of April, the scientist explains why the coronavirus will not only occupy us for a few months. Many of us should have hoped in April that after the hard lockdown everything would be “normal” again, but Nguyen-Kim predicted even then that the lowering of the reproductive value and the number of infections could lead to relaxation, but not the virus can wipe out.
As early as April, the scientist announced that we would have to deal with the coronavirus for at least one to two years and that a vaccine would probably be the only way to end the pandemic. Eight months later we find that Mai Thi Nguyen-Kim was right back then. In October, the 33-year-old received the Federal Cross of Merit.
2. Joko and Klaas – men’s worlds – harassment of women
After the entertainers Joko Winterscheidt and Klaas Heufer-Umlauf received 15 minutes of airtime from their station ProSieben in May 2020, the two dedicated themselves to an important topic: In the film “Men’s Worlds”, pictures, chat processes and personal stories showed how frightening everyday sexual harassment was towards women is. Since a description in this video is not nearly as effective as the pictures themselves, you should take the 15 minutes and watch the video in full length.
3. BibisBeautyPalace – We show you our house
In addition to serious and important topics, there were of course videos in 2020 that were easier to digest. Influencers Bibiana and Julian Claßen, better known as BibisBeautyPalace and Julienco, presented their new house to the YouTube community in June. In an almost half-hour video, the two show their three floors with almost 500 square meters of living space. The video is a must for anyone who needs inspiration for a new home or for dreams of the future.
4. Rezo – The destruction of the press
The “last year’s winner” Rezo (The destruction of the CDU) lands in fourth place this year. In the one-hour video “The Destruction of the Press”, the YouTuber shows why conspiracy tales are getting a lot of attention in 2020 and why some media are not indifferent to it. A good video to understand a little better the genesis of conspiracy narratives, but also the reporting.
5. Harald Lesch – Coronavirus – unnecessary alarm with Covid-19?
As early as March, the physicist Harald Lesch explained in a video why the numbers at the beginning of the corona pandemic were reason enough to worry and to adopt strong measures to combat the pandemic. Looking back, it can be seen that Lesch gave a very precise assessment of the situation at this time, although there was hardly any information about the corona virus at that time. In addition, the physicist explains very conclusively why the argument that only a small proportion of those infected with corona needs to be treated in the intensive care unit is ineffective when there are high numbers of infections.
6. Der Spiegel – The Penny Market on the Reeperbahn (1)
In April, Der Spiegel published a documentary about the penny market on Hamburg’s Reeperbahnwhich was filmed back in 2007. Not only the regular Sunday openings make the market a specialty, also its visitors: people who are heavily marked by life and whose anchor is the daily bottle of schnapps, people who would probably have nothing to eat without the stolen, cold canned soup and customers, who walk through the supermarket with their pocket calculator in order to buy as many groceries as possible as cheaply as possible without the shopping trolley collapsing.
On the one hand it is a documentary that makes you smile, because it shows the most diverse types of “people”, on the other hand it also shows how difficult it is for many people in everyday life and how hopeless their situation is.
7. Late Night Berlin – What is a Bratan? Children ask rappers with Capital Bra & Bozza
Capital Bra is Germany’s most popular artist in 2020. His lyrics are often about drugs, women and money – just rap. It looks similar with Bozza. Even if children of the age of the two “rap journalists” Pauline and Romeo do not belong to the target group of the two musicians, in a five-minute video the two kids ask the rappers questions like “Are you allowed to play outside with your Gucci things, they’ll get dirty ?! ” or “What’s a Bratan?”. A video that makes you smile and shows the two “tough” rappers from a different angle.
8. Pamela Reif – 10 Minuten Beginner AB Workout // No Equipment
Many of us suddenly found ourselves without sport in the spring. Club sports were no longer allowed and fitness studios had to close. That’s why fitness studios or fitness trainers increasingly uploaded workout videos in which everyone could do the exercise at home. One of the first of these videos was made by Pamela Reif, who caused a lot of leg and abdominal muscle soreness in Germany with her ten-minute workout in February. The video has now been viewed over 27 million times (as of December 7th).
9. Addicted to sewing – 10 minute mask l Sewing a simple makeshift mask l Quick face mask for beginners with a nose clip
The operator of the “Sewing addict” channel showed a good nose at exactly the right time. The channel has almost 60,000 subscribers. The video, in which it is shown how a mouth and nose protection can be easily sewn yourself, has almost 4.8 million views (as of December 7th). As the title suggests, the video shows how you can easily make a mask within 10 minutes.
10.DAZN – Bayern tornado sweeps over Barca: FC Barcelona – FC Bayern 2: 8
If football fans think back to one game in 2020, it is probably this one. FC Bayern’s 8-2 win against FC Barcelona in the final of the UEFA Champions League caused even more astonishment for some spectators than Germany’s 7-1 win against Brazil in 2014. Bayern played as if they had only had this game for the past five years practiced. FC Barcelona around Lionel Messi had no chance. Those three minutes are a feast for the eyes for anyone who doesn’t necessarily stick with the Catalans.
