The semi-final pairings in the DFB Cup are set. While HSV meets SC Freiburg, there is a Bundesliga duel between Leipzig and Union Berlin for a place in the final.
On the way to their first major title, top favorite RB Leipzig meets Union Berlin in the semifinals of the DFB Cup. This was the result of the draw on Sunday evening by Olympic bobsleigh champion Laura Nolte as part of the ARD sports show. In the second semi-final, the last remaining second division team has a home game: Hamburger SV welcomes SC Freiburg. The game will be played on April 20th and 21st, before the final takes place on May 21st in the traditional Berlin Olympic Stadium.
In the case of the women, on the other hand, there is a real cracker: FC Bayern, led by captain Lina Magull, welcomes VfL Wolfsburg to the “early final”. Bayer Leverkusen and Turbine Potsdam complete the second semi-final. The games will be played on April 17th and 18th, the final will take place on May 28th in Cologne.
Freiburg in the semifinals for the first time since 2013
Leipzig had won the second division side Hannover 96 (4-0) on Wednesday and could reach the final for the third time with a win after 2019 and 2021. For the first time in nine years, Freiburg are back in the semi-finals after their last-minute win in extra time at VfL Bochum (2-1).
HSV, the only semi-finalist to have already won the cup, had also qualified for the semi-finals in the only second division duel against Karlsruher SC (3-2 penalties), Union Berlin had already won 2-1 against FC St .Pauli celebrated.
The two permanent finalists Bayern Munich (2nd round) and Borussia Dortmund (round of 16) failed early on.
