A Black Jesus
Was Jesus Black? In the small Sicilian town of Siculiana, at least the Savior has a dark skin color. For years there has been a crucifix in a church showing a black Son of God. Filmmaker Luca Lucchesi went to Siculiana, which is also his father’s hometown, for his documentary “A Black Jesus”. Here he met 19-year-old Edward. Edward comes from Ghana, but now he lives in a refugee center that is highly controversial in the town. And Edward has a dream: in the great procession that is held every year in Siculiana, he would like to carry the black crucifix through the town. “I want Africans and Europeans to become one,” he says into the camera. “Because Jesus Christ is there for everyone.”
“A Black Jesus” will be shown at various cinema open airs from the end of May. The film, which was produced by Wim Wenders, can also be streamed online from May 20th at filmwelt-digital.de.
