These are the October 2021 game releases

The football seasons are in full swing all over the world and that means that a new edition of Fifa is on the shelves. The most exciting new feature is the so-called HyperMotion for the PS5 and Xbox Series consoles. Using this technique, EA had 22 players compete against each other in motion capture suits in real life and then bring ‘lifelike’ animations to the game. That should provide a more authentic gameplay and controls in Fifa 22, giving you the feeling that you are watching a real match.

In addition, career mode enthusiasts can rub their hands in the face, because this year you can not only manage a club, but also build one from scratch. Cool! For the rest, we know exactly what to expect from Fifa 22: updated team sheets and the full focus on the flagship Ultimate Team. Hopefully this will provide another football season of entertainment!

Developer Remedy Entertainment could keep it a secret for a long time, but about a month ago the bullet went through the church: the call for Alan Wake Remastered has been heard and the game will be released on October 5! The remaster aims to bring the complete Alan Wake experience to consoles and PC – for the first time, Alan Wake will also appear on PlayStation consoles. The developer promises not to change the story, so players of the original know exactly what to expect from the main game and two expansions. With 4K resolutions and polished cutscenes, Remedy Entertainment is steaming Alan Wake up for the current generation of consoles, and hopefully that’s enough to enjoy a spooky trip to Bright Falls (again)!

It took a while, but from October 7th we can finally get started with Far Cry 6. Pull out your summer blouse again, because this time we travel to the fictional Caribbean island of Yara, which is strongly inspired by Cuba. Yara is ruled by the dictator Antón Castillo and that immediately bodes well, because this bad guy is played by Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul). In Far Cry 6, players take on the role of Dani Rojas, who joins guerrilla fighters intent on overthrowing the Castillo regime. Just like in Far Cry 5, part 6 can be played entirely in co-op with someone else, so find a buddy who knows how to navigate the tropical setting of Yara.

In recent weeks, developer Ubisoft has already given an insight into the content of Far Cry 6 with various gameplay and expansion trailers and it shows that we can expect enough chaos and gunfire again. We’ll see on October 7 whether it will be worth a trip to Yara!

Samus Aran is back in the first new Metroid main story in 19 years. Set after Fusion in 2002, Metroid Dread closely follows Samus as she descends to the planet ZDR to decipher a vague message. On the planet, Samus discovers that the EMMI, previously arrived security robots, have gone mad and are hunting anything that moves. Fortunately, that’s fine in Dread, because Samus is more agile and smoother than ever, and that should ensure tight gameplay while you cut your enemies a head. Metroid Dread promises to be an exciting, grim and above all classic Metroid adventure. Is it October 8 already?!

If you’re not averse to shivering behind your console, circle October 22 in your calendar with a red marker. Then the latest game in the Dark Pictures anthology appears. House of Ashes is set in the Iraq year of 2003, in the midst of the war between Iraq and America. Like predecessors Man of Medan and Little Hope, House of Ashes is an interactive drama, where the player takes control of five different characters, all of whom face nerve-racking dilemmas.

Fortunately, House of Ashes seems to have learned from mistakes of the previous games, because in this edition, for example, players can control the camera themselves, instead of the game choosing the most impossible points of view for you. Because House of Ashes takes place in several darkened, underground tombs, the game also introduces a tactical flashlight that you can use to light your path. That will undoubtedly cause the necessary jump scares, so be wary!

Despite Marvel’s Avengers ending in a minor debacle, Square Enix is trying again this year with Guardians of the Galaxy. Players take the role of Star-Lord in this third-person action adventure, visiting various planets and iconic characters on their quest to save the galaxy. Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy bets heavily on the tactical element of the combat, as Star-Lord you control the other Guardians while choosing the right moment to strike. And whether you do that with your Element Blasters or with a dropkick from your jetboots, every fight requires a different approach.

Hopefully Square Enix has learned from the mistakes Crystal Dynamics made with Marvel’s Avengers, but thankfully the early signs are positive. Wouter and Jacco were already allowed to check the game and found the battles feel nice and smooth and the tactical aspect of this works well. In addition, the dialogues fit well with the setting of the game, in which the Guardians only just got to know each other. The level design can still get some attention according to the gentlemen, because they still look a bit faded. Whether Guardians of the Galaxy has actually learned from those mistakes and will do much better than Marvel’s Avengers, we’ll see from October 26th!
