These are the new rules for looking for a social rental home

The living space distribution for social rental housing in Amsterdam and the surrounding area will change. The change is necessary, the municipality writes, to give households with an urgent wish to move more likely to have a home. The proposal takes better account of the house hunter who desperately needs a home but does not qualify for urgency.

The proposal for a new distribution was released yesterday. A points system will be introduced in which, in addition to registration time, active searching and specific circumstances will also play a role. In doing so, the 15 municipalities and corporations want to do justice to house hunters who need extra support.

‘It is great that we, with 15 municipalities and 14 corporations, have come to a different distribution of social rental housing and that all residents have been able to think about the groups of people who should be given priority. In this way, we can ensure that social rental homes more often end up with the people who need them the most, ‘says housing councilor Laurens Ivens.

Wait, search and situation points

The new system works with points. The current registration time is converted to waiting points. Waiting points are always maintained until a new rental home has been found. New are the search points and situation points.

The purpose of search points is to give people who search actively more chance. This gives them more influence on obtaining a home. Situation points are only built up by someone when they have specific urgent circumstances.

The municipality announces that many residents have been involved in developing the new method. Residents were asked, among other things, which house seekers should be given priority. The three most frequently mentioned situations are: break-up with children, families living at home and problematic young people living at home. Home seekers in such a situation therefore receive situation points for this, which increases the chance of a new rental home.

Urgency remains

The urgency system will continue to exist, but there are strict rules attached to it. If a home seeker quickly needs a home, but too little registration time and is not eligible for an urgency, they will be squeezed in the current system.

The assessment of income and family size does not change either. And some target groups continue to take precedence, such as the elderly, large families and residents of a municipality.

From Tuesday to 28 July, residents in their own municipality can respond to the proposal. A decision is to be taken by the end of this year.
