Terkini.id, Kupang – In addition to rumors or hoaxes related to vaccines, there are many rumors and myths circulating so that they become obstacles that prevent some people from getting vaccinated. Moreover, the myths are milling about on social media that cannot be verified.
For that, someone should be wise in responding and do not immediately believe in information that is not yet clear. The reason is, these myths are massively circulating on various virtual world platforms, one of which is chain messages on WhatsApp (WA).
In order not to be trapped by hoaxes and myths, someone, both as a person and as a leader in a family community, should examine the news more carefully. The reason is, if someone is dragged into the flow of hoaxes, it is not me who loses as an individual but also his family.

In fact, the purpose of vaccination is very clear to protect from the transmission of Covid-19 and its destructive effects such as illness and even death.
Reporting from Covid-19.go.id, Thursday 9 September 2021, one of the massive myths circulating in the community is about vaccines that can cause infertility. Is this myth true?

Vaccine expert who specializes in pneumococcal epidemiology, Dr Katherine O’Brien explained, the vaccine given can not cause infertility.
Previously, myths related to vaccines being injected into a person could pose a risk of infertility or fertility. The disorder is in the form of infertility for women.
“These are rumors that have been circulating about many different vaccines and those rumors are not true. There is no vaccine that causes infertility,” said Katherine in an interview for episode 24 on ‘Vaccine Myths vs Science’ with the World Health Organization (WHO).

In addition, another myth that is circulating massively is that vaccines can change Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA). DNA, which is the genetic material that determines the nature and physical characteristics of a person, is said to change after the Covid-19 vaccine enters the body.
Responding to this, Katherine, who is also an epidemiologist and infectious disease doctor, said it was impossible for a vaccine to change a person’s DNA.
“We’ve heard this rumour. We have two vaccines now which are called mRNA vaccines, and there is no way that mRNA can turn into the DNA of our human cells.”
Furthermore, he explained that mRNA is the body’s instructions for making proteins. Most vaccines are developed by actually delivering the protein or delivering a small component of the germ that is being vaccinated against.
“This is a new approach, where instead of giving that tiny piece, we just give our own body instructions to make that tiny piece and then our natural immune system responds to it,” Katherine added.
In addition, another destruction myth says there are harmful chemicals.
As is known, previously the myth was enough to cause an uproar to make some people reluctant to vaccinate. The myth also mentions about the composition of vaccines in which there are chemicals that harm people who get the vaccine.
Katherine insists, this is a big myth. The vaccine that is injected into the recipient has been confirmed to be safe.
According to him, all the components that go into the vaccine are rigorously tested to make sure everything in there, including the dose is safe for humans.
“Vaccines do contain a number of different elements and each one has been tested. Before being given to humans, they are tested on animals and tested for any problems in animals,” added Katherine.
Next, he continued, they went into human trials. In this phase, it is testing in clinical trials with tens of thousands of people, eventually receiving the vaccines before they are allowed for use in the general public.
The question of safety, Katherine added, is the most important part of the clinical trial. Each vaccine goes through a safety evaluation to ensure it is safe before being used in the general public.
“In addition, the manufacture of vaccines has constant quality control so that every ingredient that goes into the vaccine is ensured to be of the best quality and safe for use in humans,” he said.
The three myths themselves are enough to make a scene in the community when the government is aggressively promoting a vaccination program.
In fact, vaccination is carried out as an effort to overcome the pandemic caused by the corona virus. If at least 70 percent of the population in a population has been vaccinated, then herd immunity can be achieved.
